Kenya is a key base in the fight against al-Shabaab, one of the world's most powerful terrorist organizations. Black smoke billowed from the airport on Sunday and a car bomb exploded, residents said. Lamu District Commissioner Irungu Macharia told The Associated Press that five suspects have been arrested and are being interrogated.
An internal Kenyan police report seen by AP said two fixed-wing aircraft, a US Cessna and a Kenyan plane were destroyed at the Manda Bay military airstrip along with two US helicopters and several US vehicles. According to the statement, an explosion was heard from the direction of the airstrip around 5.30 am. The report said the scene, now secure, indicated al-Shabaab may have entered to "carry out targeted attacks".
According to Pentagon figures, there are fewer than 100 US military personnel at Camp Simba. The nearby Manta Bay Airfield trains US forces and provides counter-terrorism support to East African partners.

Al-Shabaab has carried out numerous attacks against civilian targets within Kenya, such as buses, schools and shopping malls. The group has been the target of escalating US airstrikes inside Somalia during the administration of Donald Trump.
The latest attack comes a week after an al-Shabaab truck bombing in Somalia's capital killed at least 79 people and seven al-Shabaab fighters were killed in US airstrikes.
Last year, al-Shabaab attacked Baledoggle, a US military base inside Somalia that is used to conduct drone strikes, but failed to penetrate. The militant group has carried out several attacks on Kenyan soldiers in the past in retaliation for sending troops to Somalia to fight Kenya.
The attack marks a significant escalation in al-Shabaab's campaign of attacks inside Kenya, said analyst Andrew Franklin, a former U.S. Marine and longtime Kenyan resident.

"(Launching this type of deliberate attack against a well-protected permanent base occupied by Kenyan security forces, contractors and US military personnel requires a great deal of planning, rehearsal, logistics and operational capability," they said). Fort DeRussy is a United States military reservation in Waikiki, Honolulu, Hawaii under the jurisdiction of the United States Army. For unconnected and mostly public transport, the installation consists primarily of terrestrial grayspace. The former Battery Randolph now houses the Hawaii US Army Museum, which is open to the public. Hale Goa Hotel, Armed Forces Recreation Center and Daniel K. The Inouye Asia-Pacific Center is also located in Fort DeRussy.
The property was once owned by Chinese billionaire businessman Chun Afong, who built a villa on the three-acre grounds. Afang used the property to host banquets and receive royal guests, dignitaries, ambassadors, military officers and others. He sold the property to the United States Army Corps of Engineers in 1904 for $28,000; The army formed the Randolph and Dudley (no longer) batteries.

Fort DeRusy in Honolulu is one of five Fort DeRusy in the United States. All four were built during the American Civil War: one in Louisiana, one in Kentucky, and one in Washington, DC. It is named after Gerald Ray Edward de Russie (1789–1865), who oversaw the construction of the military fort and was also superintendent of West Point during his tenure. Both Ray and his younger brother Louis, who came to the United States as refugees from Saint-Domingue (now Haiti) with their families, grew up in Virginia and graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point. At an advanced age, both served during the American Civil War: Ray on the Union side and Lewis in the Confederate Army, the oldest West Point graduate to serve in it.
Located on Waikiki Beach near Oahu's historic Royal Hawaiian Hotel and Moana Hotel, the former Shore Battery Randolph was used for rest and recovery (R&R) service during the Vietnam War. Fort Drusy was one of several coastal batteries originally designed to provide coastal defense on the island of Oahu.
As the effectiveness of air strikes increased, most of the guns at these sites were decommissioned in the early 1950s. The 14-inch guns of Shore Battery Randolph fired practically once after the attack on Pearl Harbor. As a result, many windows were broken at the Royal Hawaiian and Moana hotels, and the guns were never fired again.

The Hawaii US Army Museum is located inside Battery Randolph, a former coastal artillery battery. Battery Randolph was built in 1911 to defend Honolulu Harbor on Oahu from attack, and was armed with two 14-inch guns on carriages that could disappear at a range of about 40,000 yards (37 km).
The museum's collection includes some World War II armor pieces, an AH-1 Cobra helicopter, and small arms and batteries. Exhibits cover the history of the U.S. military's war in the Pacific Hemisphere and admission is free.
Another installation of two 6-inch guns was called Battery Dudley, G. Edgar S. Named after Dudley (died 1911). FILE - Chinese People's Liberation Army soldiers attend the opening ceremony of China's new military base in Djibouti on August 1, 2017.
