Known as The Reaper, Nicholas Irving is an Army Ranger marksman and machine gunner with 33 kills on a single deployment and an unconfirmed kill total that could easily reach triple digits. But Irving, now 30 and retired from the military, has been haunted by nightmares since the day he was killed. Since then, his life has been riddled with alcoholism, post-traumatic stress disorder and suicidal thoughts, including a failed attempt. He says there is now light at the end of the tunnel. In November 2016, his wife gave birth to their first child and he has been clean and sober ever since. But every night, enemies of his still rise from the dead to haunt his dreams.
The nightmare is always the same. The first man killed by Nicholas Irving appears as a ceiling fan above his bed. the man's head becomes the center of the fan; His arms and legs are ciphers. Irving is immobilized and cannot move. The propeller spins faster and faster and descends towards Irving. Eventually it gets out of control and explodes in a spray of blood that covers him and everything else in the room.

The first time he experienced this nightmare was the night after his first kill. Irving was a newly minted Ranger at the time, part of the 3rd Ranger Battalion of the 75th Army Regiment, an 18-year-old machine gunner serving in Tikrit in 2004. An expert with a variety of heavy weapons, a day's work behind the iron sights 50 caliber. For starters, the 50-cal is designed to take down vehicles and is tough enough to chew through tank armor and mess up pedals. Its effect on the flesh-and-blood human images etched in Irving's head he will never forget.
"It turned into a jelly, a mist... and just... a weird look," says Irving. "It just disintegrated and vaporized in your car."

Irving will never know the actual number of enemy combatants he killed in battle, which could be upwards of 100 men. That's because he participated in several fierce battles, such as the 2007 battle in Mosul, which he called a "hotel party".
Way Of The Reaper
Irving and his colleagues used every weapon system at his disposal. By the end of the battle, the Army had dropped 500 and 1,000 pound bombs on the enemy position. The helicopters providing air support expended all their machine gun and rocket ammunition and began firing melee weapons from their windows. Irving unloaded round after round of 50 cal ammo into the building - opening window after window in a process he likened to Whack-a-Mole. By the end of the day, every man in Irving's unit was out of ammunition.
He still raves about his exploits and compares the adrenaline of fighting to playing in the Super Bowl. His ability to speak candidly about his experiences and his acute recall of specific, often gory details make him almost as big an anomaly in the veteran community as his formidable battlefield stats.
But the price Irving paid was too high. Aside from the fact that his first kill returns an annual nightmare, the other 364 nights of the year are filled with even worse horrors. He only dreamed of one thing - that the men he killed would come back for him. But in his dreams, Irving's bullets are useless. The dead cross his line of fire and hack him to pieces with axes, axes, or broken bottles.
"I mean they got better," says Irving. "The whole cut part, it's cut as it happens. I used to see it all happen as an out-of-body experience."
